Do's and Don'ts: Workplace Comfort

Published:

Comfortable environments have been linked to increased sales, improved productivity and better retention. Let's take a look at some do's and don'ts for workplace comfort.

DO think about what's happening in the space. Temperature and comfort may differ depending on the activity and clothing worn by occupants. Someone sitting in an office would have different preferences than someone lifting boxes.

DO set different day and night schedules. Providing a comfortable temperature for occupants is key, but raising the temperature in the summer by 5 to 8 degrees can save you up to 15% on cooling costs.

DO consider switching to smart thermostats. Smart thermostats can adjust to the number of occupants, keeping everyone comfortable and saving money when less heating and cooling is needed.

DON'T use extreme setpoints. A room will not heat or cool any quicker based on the setpoint. It will overheat or overcool when the temperature is set too high or too low.

DON'T adjust the temperature often. Regularly changing the temperature overworks the heater or air conditioner while making it harder for people to get comfortable. Pick a comfortable temperature for most employees and stick with it.

DON'T forget to change thermostat batteries. Thermostats may not work properly if battery power is low. Check the status of batteries regularly and change them if they're low.

When it comes to workplace comfort, be sure to do it right and don't ignore any of these guidelines.
