Even if you don't own the space that your business occupies, you still have to pay your energy bills. A major system upgrade may not be possible, but there are plenty of simple energy-saving measures and low-cost upgrades available to help you reduce your energy costs and make your business space more comfortable and productive.
Simple energy-saving measures
These simple operational changes can make a big difference on your energy bills. They're easy to implement, and they won't cost you a dime.
- Shut off lights in empty rooms or in occupied spaces when natural daylight is sufficient.
- Adjust building temperatures to avoid wasting energy and money keeping empty spaces comfortable.
- Implement power management "sleep" settings on all computers and office equipment.
- Network printers and copiers so that one is shared by multiple employees. It will save energy and reduce equipment costs and paper use.
- Limit the use of personal appliances, such as space heaters and fans, by maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature.
If you have kitchen operations, keep pots and pans covered while cooking to avoid wasting energy. Turn down or shut off cooking equipment during idle periods and clean equipment daily. Keep refrigerator doors closed and wait until you have a full load before running your dishwasher.
Low-cost upgrades
These small energy-saving investments can help you save a lot. Some may require coordination with your landlord or building owner.
- Install a programmable thermostat to optimize savings and comfort. Newer smart models provide convenient features, such as remote control.
- Upgrade linear fluorescent lamps to LEDs. LED lamps are more efficient, last longer and provide better quality light. Simple replacement lamps are available that can fit right into the existing fixtures.
- Install occupancy or vacancy sensors in meeting rooms, restrooms and other areas with varying occupancy.
- Seal gaps in windows and exterior doors with caulk or weatherstripping.
- Upgrade computers and office equipment to ENERGY STARĀ®-certified models. ENERGY STAR office equipment uses less energy than standard products.
- Plug electrical devices into advanced power strips, which automatically shut off power to unused equipment.
